Texas Sheet Cake

Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 15×10 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the cocoa powder and water, whisking until smooth. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove from heat.
  4. Pour the hot butter mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until well combined.
  5. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, baking soda, and vanilla extract.
  6. Add the egg mixture to the chocolate batter and stir until well combined.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. While the cake is baking, make the frosting. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the cocoa powder and milk, whisking until smooth. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove from heat.
  9. Add the vanilla extract and powdered sugar to the hot mixture, stirring until smooth.
  10. Pour the hot frosting over the warm cake and spread it evenly over the surface. Let the cake cool completely before serving.
