What is an onion?
It belongs to the Allium family of plants, which also includes onions, chives, garlic, and leeks. These vegetables have characteristic pungent aromas and some medicinal properties.
Onions differ in size, shape, color and flavor. The most common types are red, yellow and white onions. The taste of these vegetables can often vary depending on the season in which they are grown and consumed.
It is common knowledge that chopping onions causes watering eyes. However, onions are very beneficial to health. Onions play a huge role in the health of people, such as reducing the risk of various types of cancer, improving mood, and maintaining skin and hair health.
What vitamins does onion contain?
Onion is an important source of especially vitamin A, C and B vitamins. It is also rich in sulfur, iodine, calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and antioxidants.
Vitamin A supports both immunity against infections and eye health. B vitamins are water-soluble vitamins. Vitamin B helps the immune and nervous system work properly. Vitamin C, on the other hand, supports protection from diseases, especially in winter.
How to consume onions
Shallots, white and dry onions are preferred as cooked in meals, while fresh green, red and purple onions are used raw on salads or meals.
Especially in winter, the immune system weakens with the change of weather. Onion, which acts as a natural antibiotic against viruses and bacteria, supports the strengthening of the weakened immune system. Onion has an antibacterial effect thanks to the sulfur (sulphurous substances) it contains. Adults and children can consume onions very easily.

What diseases are onions useful for? What are the benefits of onions?
Studies show that onions help reduce the risk of developing cancer types such as ovarian and colorectal, thanks to the antioxidant called quercetin. In particular, red onions contain more antioxidant substances that eliminate free radicals that damage healthy cells in the body, compared to dry and white onions.
In addition, the quercetin in onions helps prevent the release of histamine, which causes allergic reactions, in immune cells. Thus, onions are known to help support immunity in people with asthma or allergic problems.
The sulfur in the onion has a blood thinning effect and prevents the accumulation of platelets that increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Other studies have shown that sulfur from onions helps delay and reduce the onset of hypertension.
What are the cancer benefits of onions?
In studies, allium vegetables have been extensively studied, especially in relation to stomach and colorectal cancers. A 2019 study in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology compared 833 people with colorectal cancer to 833 people without the disease. Researchers found that those who regularly consumed allium vegetables such as onions had a 79% lower risk of colorectal cancer.
One cup of chopped onions also provides at least 13.11% of an adult’s recommended daily intake of vitamin C. As an antioxidant, this vitamin helps counteract the formation of free radical compounds that have been linked to cancer.
Still, more research is needed to confirm which compounds in onions have protective effects against cancer.
How should onions be stored?
As a society, one of the most common mistakes when storing onions is to keep or store them in the same environment as potatoes. Because the moisture emitted by the potato causes the onion to sprout and rot. Storing dried onions in a cool and dry environment ensures that they are consumed fresh for a long time. Onions that are left unfinished can be stored in the refrigerator by putting them in a glass storage container.
Putting fresh onions wet in the refrigerator is one of the other mistakes made. First of all, if there are leaves that have lost their freshness, they should be cleaned and then wrapped in paper towels and stored in the refrigerator. In this way, fresh onions can be kept fresh longer.
