• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 large marshmallows
  • 12 Hershey’s chocolate bars, broken into pieces


  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the water, vegetable oil, white vinegar, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, whisking until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups, filling each about 2/3 full.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and turn on the broiler.
  8. Top each cupcake with a large marshmallow and place the cupcakes under the broiler for about 30 seconds, or until the marshmallows are golden brown and toasted.
  9. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and immediately press a piece of Hershey’s chocolate onto the top of each marshmallow.
  10. Let the cupcakes cool completely before serving.
