Once upon a time, there was a baker named Anna who loved to experiment with different cake recipes. One day, she decided to try her hand at making a German Chocolate Cake, despite never having attempted it before.
She gathered all the ingredients, carefully measured and mixed them together, and poured the batter into the cake pans. As the cake baked in the oven, Anna couldn’t help but feel excited and a little nervous about how it would turn out.
After the cakes cooled, Anna started making the frosting. As she cooked the mixture on the stovetop, the scent of caramelized sugar, butter, and coconut filled the kitchen. She added the chopped pecans and tasted the frosting, savoring the rich, sweet flavor.
Anna then spread the frosting between the two cake layers, taking care to make it even and smooth. She stepped back to admire her handiwork, feeling proud of what she had accomplished.
That evening, Anna brought the German Chocolate Cake to a dinner party with friends. As she sliced into the cake, everyone’s eyes widened at the sight of the moist, chocolaty layers and the thick, nutty frosting.
The first bite brought a collective sigh of pleasure from the table. The cake was a hit, and Anna felt grateful for the opportunity to share her baking skills and her love for German Chocolate Cake with her friends.
From that day on, Anna’s German Chocolate Cake became a staple at gatherings and celebrations, and she became known among her friends as the “cake whisperer.” She continued to experiment with different flavors and techniques, but the German Chocolate Cake always held a special place in her heart and the hearts of those who enjoyed it.
Ingredients:
For the cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
For the coconut-pecan frosting:
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Stir in the boiling water, mixing until well combined.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the coconut-pecan frosting. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter, and vanilla extract.
- Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon (about 12-15 minutes).
- Stir in the shredded coconut and chopped pecans.
- Remove the frosting from the heat and let it cool to room temperature.
- Once the cakes are finished baking, let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and let them cool completely on wire racks.
- Spread the coconut-pecan frosting evenly over one of the cake layers, then top with the second cake layer.
- Spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides of the cake.
- Chill the German Chocolate Cake in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Recipe suggestion:
This recipe looks great! However, one suggestion I would make is to consider adding a pinch of cinnamon to the dry ingredients to give the cake a subtle warmth and depth of flavor. Additionally, for those who may be watching their sugar intake, you could try reducing the amount of granulated sugar in both the cake batter and frosting by about 1/4 cup each, without sacrificing the overall taste and texture.
