Ingredients:
- 1 pound phyllo pastry sheets
- 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, melted
- 3 cups finely chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 cup honey
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the finely chopped walnuts, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves until well combined.
- Lay a sheet of phyllo pastry in the bottom of the greased baking dish and brush it with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each layer with butter.
- Sprinkle one-third of the nut mixture evenly over the phyllo pastry layers.
- Layer another 8 sheets of phyllo pastry on top of the nut mixture, brushing each sheet with butter.
- Add another layer of the nut mixture, using half of what remains.
- Layer another 8 sheets of phyllo pastry on top of the nut mixture, brushing each sheet with butter.
- Add the remaining nut mixture, spreading it evenly over the phyllo pastry.
- Layer the remaining phyllo pastry sheets on top, brushing each sheet with butter. Brush the top layer generously with butter.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake the baklava for 45 to 50 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a small saucepan, combine the honey, water, and lemon juice. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, until the syrup has thickened slightly.
- When the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it, making sure to cover all the cut edges.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
